2023 Summer Yeast Share Competition
Register here!
Ice Box Brewing Company and Mesilla Valley Homebrew Club have partnered together to offer a Mesilla Valley Homebrew Club Spring / Summer 2023 Brewing Competition! The winner will get to brew their recipe with the awesome brewers from Ice Box Brewing Company. A portion of the profits will be split between the David Allan Brewer’s & Distiller’s Scholarship fund at NMSU, as well as the Mesilla Valley Homebrew Club.
The competition will be an Ale yeast share where Ice Box will sell fresh yeast that must be used in the beer that you brew. Icebox will make available their Oregon IPA (Northwest Ale) yeast, which is used in a number of their ales at their brewery and taprooms, and if their brewing schedule permits, also their Fog Machine yeast that they use in their Hazy IPA. Ice Box Brewing will provide a yeast profile explaining the characteristics of the yeast(s). The yeast that you use in this competition must be sourced from Ice Box. So that we can more easily judge beers against each other, the style of acceptable beer submissions must be from these general categories:
- American Pale Ale
- India Pale Ale (IPA)
- Double IPAs (DIPA’s)
Ice Box Brewing will sell their yeast in canning jars (Mason jars), and they can be purchased for $5 per jar to cover their expenses. One jar should be easily enough for a 5-gallon batch. If you are considering submitting a sour beer, Ice Box will only brew kettle sours, so please no bacterial fermentations or mixed fermentations.
Yeast pick ups: Friday, May 26th and Friday, June 9th
In addition to the cost of the yeast, there will be a registration fee in addition to the cost of the yeast. Entry fee per beer is $10.00 for Mesilla Valley Homebrew Club members, and $15.00 for non-Club members.
Judging will be on the 15th of July, and will be judged by club members, entrants who are present, and Ice Box Brewing employees.
This is a “popularity contest” style competition. Judges will sample all the entries and select the entry that is most appealing. The entry that receives the most votes is the winner. In the event of a tie, the 3-member production team of Ice Box will vote to break the tie and select a single winner.
